The San Francisco Boys Chorus concert for Haiti Earthquake victims in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Oakland and the Cathedral of Christ the Light raised more than $27,000, with almost 2000 people in attendance at the acoustically acclaimed cathedral. The concert, under the direction of Ian Robertson, also featured acclaimed mezzo-sopranos Frederica von Stade and Zheng Cao, members of the San Francisco Opera Chorus, International Orange Chorale, Cathedral organist Rudy De Vos and accompanists Ernest Fredric Knell and Charles Calhoun.
The partnership begins January 4 and allows boy singers from East Bay communities to rehearse and perform at the Cathedral. “We are delighted with the move to the Cathedral,” said Ian Robertson, the Chorus' Artistic Director. “This is an important step that will help us better serve the East Bay community and provide the opportunity of music education to an even larger number of boys.”
The San Francisco Boys Chorus also will continue to hold training programs in San Francisco and Marin County but will add performances at the Cathedral several times a year. Performance schedules will be announced soon, adding to a growing list of musical and cultural events at the Cathedral Center. Full news and event schedules can be found at www.ctlcathedral.org.
Rudy de Vos, Cathedral Music Director, said “We enter this partnership excited about the teaching component that the Boys Chorus brings to the Cathedral Center. Education within the community is a foundational ministry for the Cathedral Center."
“As well, the recent Chanticleer concert at the Cathedral illustrated beyond a doubt that the Cathedral’s choral acoustics are world-class. We look forward to the Boys Chorus performances.”
The Cathedral of Christ the Light is located in downtown Oakland on Lake Merritt at Grand Avenue and Harrison Street. It is the newest Cathedral in the world, designed by Craig Hartman and his Skidmore, Owings & Merrill team and dedicated in September 2008 during a month-long series of Catholic liturgies and community events.
