The SFBC is a Performing Organization and a Training Chorus School
The San Francisco Boys Chorus (SFBC) is comprised of the Grammy award-winning Concert Chorus, the Graduate Chorale, the Hand Bell Program and the four-level Training Chorus School, which includes the Preparatory Chorus.
The CONCERT CHORUS is the SFBC’s premiere performing ensemble and is comprised of choristers who exhibit vocal excellence, performance flair, and exceptional musicianship skills. Led by Artistic Director, Ian Robertson, the committed Concert Chorus members, ages 10 to 13, presents a full concert series in the San Francisco Bay Area, tour internationally, record and appear annually with renowned artistic partners, such as San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony and most recently, the Robert Moses Kin Dance Company. Through performances and events, the Concert Choristers advance musically and mature as young men while gaining appreciation for economically and socially diverse cultures and communities.
The Concert Chorus is the level to which Training Chorus School singers aspire! Under the guidance of Associate Artistic Director, Margaret Nomura Clark, M.M.E., the San Francisco Boys Chorus faculty train youngsters through four TRAINING CHORUS SCHOOL levels, beginning as early as kindergarten in the Preparatory Chorus (Level I) and up through the Junior Apprentice (Level II), Apprentice (Level III), and in time to the Intermediate Chorus (Level IV).
Alongside bi-weekly choral rehearsals, choristers receive music theory and sight-singing training through the Chorus’ Musicianship Program. Designed by the SFBC’s Music Education Director, Jennifer Cooper, the SFBC Musicianship Program provides a highly-structured learning environment using methods inspired by mid-twentieth century Hungarian music educator Zoltán Kodàly.
