MADI BACON ENDOWMENT FUND —A Merit-Based Scholarship

Madi Bacon, distinguished conductor, teacher, and music educator directed the San Francisco Boys Chorus from its inception until her retirement in 1972.

Madi Bacon founded the San Francisco Boys Chorus in 1948 and was its conductor and Music Director until her retirement in 1972. The Madi Bacon Endowment Fund for Music Education Scholarships celebrates and memorializes her. This Fund honors her courage, her quest for excellence, her élan, and her joyful approach to learning and music making.

In Madi Bacon’s Chorus, every single person was an individual and valued. It did not matter whether a boy was a soloist in the concert group or a new singer in the training group. It did not matter if a boy came from a moneyed background or was on scholarship. Madi Bacon did everything she could to help each boy realize his potential and provide him with a real sense of community while singing with the Chorus.

The Madi Bacon Endowment Fund for the San Francisco Boys Chorus provides an annual, merit-based scholarship award to one or more choristers. The scholarships go to choristers who demonstrate strong musical and vocal promise and whose behavior and Chorus citizenship are exemplary. Additionally the awardees must have been a member of the Chorus for at least one full year. The scholarships are applied towards the cost of the selected choristers’ tuition and music education at the San Francisco Boys Chorus.

In 2007, alumnus Peter Libby, M.D. established the Madi Bacon Endowment. In 2013, the Marin Community Foundation assumed management of the Madi Bacon Endowment Fund for the benefit of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. The Foundation is one of the nation’s premiere community foundations that uses its investment expertise to help nonprofit organizations. With more than $1 billion under management, the Marin Community Foundation ensures that the Endowment Fund is managed prudently to build and protect the Fund for the future.
