Rehearsals

Rehearsals and performances are the heartbeat of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. They are where choristers learn and present repertoire – and where lifelong friendships develop.

Open and Closed Rehearsals

Rehearsals are generally closed – meaning that parents/guardians and other visitors are not permitted to attend. This policy allows choristers, faculty, and music staff to focus on rehearsals, lessons, and the important work that leads to a unified choral concert.

The SFBC has open rehearsals twice a year. These are special days when parents can watch their son’s rehearsal in action.

As a way to see closed rehearsals, parents are encouraged to volunteer as Parent Monitors (teacher aides) during rehearsals

Sectional Rehearsals

A “sectional” is a rehearsal where all boys on the same voice part break away to rehearse just their musical part. For instance, the 2nd sopranos might be called into another room – or to a special rehearsal – to go over just their part of music. This strengthens the sound once combined again with their peers who are singing other parts. Members of the Concert Chorus attend sectionals throughout the semester. Three Bay Area Campuses

As of September 2011, the SFBC enrolls over 240 choristers at three Bay Area campuses. The campuses are separate from the SFBC’s administrative offices. The San Francisco campus was founded in 1948; the East Bay campus was founded in January 2003; and the Marin County campus was founded in September 2004.

San Francisco rehearsals are held at the Kanbar Performing Arts Center, 44 Page Street, San Francisco (See map)

Regular Weekly Schedule

East Bay Campus (Oakland)

East Bay rehearsals are held at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison Street in Oakland. (See map) There is parking in the garage for $3 and there’s a room for parents to wait during rehearsal.

• Apprentices and Intermediates meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 4:45-6:45 p.m.
• Junior Apprentices meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
• Preps meet each Thursday from 4:00-4:45 p.m.

Marin Campus (San Rafael)

Marin rehearsals are held in San Rafael at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 1123 Court Street. (See map)
